Sylvia Garcia Nunez

On December 29, 2024, Sylvia García Núñez (73), passed away suddenly to her eternal resting place. Sylvia was born on May 27, 1951, in the small town of Beeville, Texas, to her beloved mother, Esperanza (Hope) Martínez, and her father, Ysidro García. She was raised by her grandparents, Pedro and María Jasso. She was a resident of Kenner, Louisiana for 34 years. As a young girl, Sylvia was taught hard work and to help others. Her grandmother taught her about upkeeping a home, while her grandfather taught her little things of the gas station he owned. She learned how to fix a flat tire and checked out customers at the register. In addition, during this time, segregation was in full force. Across the street from the gas station, there was a school for colored students. Some of the students would come to the gas station to purchase a few snacks. Her grandfather taught her compassion to serve those, no matter the color of their skin, in which she kept that quality throughout her life to help anyone in need. Sylvia was a woman of many talents and passions. In her earlier years, she attended A.C. Jones High School and went on to learn secretarial studies at the College of San Antonio in Texas. Her jobs consisted of assistance at the San Antonio newspaper, a secretary at Bledsoe's Furniture Store, and a secretary at Century law office. Sylvia worked there until she met, married, and moved with her beloved husband, Edmundo Núñez. Then, she started her life as a military spouse. The military moved them from Texas to Georgia, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. She held the fort down, when Ed would leave for training. She also took care of the logistics of things for moving with kids and pets and kept so many things as organized as possible. In her free time, she enjoyed wood crafting. She'd see something she liked in the store and told herself she could make it. She was a strong, loving, Catholic woman who said many prayers throughout her life for family & friends. She loved dancing with her children when they were younger. She enjoyed celebrating Birthdays and Christmases with the family, loved spending time with her sweet grandchildren, Keegan & Kaden, and crafting them something special, and loved watching football and soap operas with Ed. Most of all, Sylvia made raising her children her priority and spent quality time with her adored family. Sylvia, along with Ed, raised three beautiful children until they left home. After they left, she stayed as present as she could along their life. Sylvia also babysat many children from time to time and helped mothers in need. She was a second mother to many. As an empty-nester, Sylvia rejoined the workforce and dedicated 15 years to Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market. With her great work ethics and her care and want to help others, she was a great employee and gave co-workers any help as needed. She also met many who became her close friends. Sylvia's impact on those around her was profound. Her selflessness, kindness, patience, giving nature, and unwavering love and care for others made her truly special. She touched the lives of many with her generosity and compassion, leaving a lasting legacy of warmth and a heart that will be cherished by all who knew her. Sylvia is survived by her loving husband, Edmundo Núñez, her three lovely children, Kim Gonzalez, Amy Núñez-Storrs, and Kevin Núñez (Kelley); her two grandchildren, Keegan and Kaden Núñez; and her brother, Joe "Freddy" Martínez (Rhonda). She is also survived by her cousins, Rosie Hinojosa and Pete Hinojosa Jr. Additionally, she is survived by nieces & nephews, Gabriel, Michael, Benjamin, Claudio Jr., Jennifer, Hector Jr., Katherine, Paul, David, Katherine, Connie, Anthony, David, Pete, Eldalise, Lee and Jason. Sylvia is preceded in death by her father, Ysidro, her mother, Esperanza, her grandparents, Pedro and Maria, her aunt, Consuelo, her uncle, Pete, and her cousins, Rudy, Larry, Richard, and Charlie Hinojosa. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation and funeral service in memory of Sylvia's life at L.A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home, 2607 Williams Blvd., Kenner, LA, on Saturday, January 11, 2025. Visitation will be held from 9:00AM to 11:00PM followed by the service at 11:00AM. After the service, Sylvia will be laid to rest at Jefferson Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 11316 River Rd, St. Rose, LA.
