Ruth "Shirley" Watts Wondergem

Ruth Watts Wondergem, affectionately known as “Shirley,” passed away peacefully with her family by her side on July 22, 2026, in Garland, Texas, at the age of 99. Shirley was born on October 8, 1926, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Vernon Howard Watts and Frances Hug Watts. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Delores Lindley and Lucille Walker. Shirley met her husband of 67 years, Captain John Wondergem, USN, in New Orleans. As a devoted military wife, she embraced a life of service, raising her family throughout the United States and volunteering in numerous community endeavors. Shirley found joy in many pursuits throughout her life. She had a lifelong passion for gardening and was an active member of the Wilshire Heights Garden Club for many years. Her beautifully maintained gardens and landscaping were admired by neighbors and friends alike. She was also an amateur (“ham”) radio operator in the New Orleans area, proudly holding the call sign N5GGO. A talented seamstress, Shirley lovingly crafted many tailored items for her family. She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, and she and her husband shared a love of travel, creating cherished memories as they explored the world. Her enduring faith in God and her Christian upbringing were the foundation of her life. She was a faithful member of Lakeview Christian Center in New Orleans. Above all, Shirley’s greatest joy was her family. She treasured her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and delighted in every opportunity to spend time with them. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Terry Willenbrock (Eric) and Diane Taylor; her grandchildren, John Wondergem (Julie), Austin Callaway, Jason Willenbrock (Holly), Katie Callaway Burns (Greg), Julie Hayhurst (Thane), and Emily Taylor (Joel); and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Captain John Wondergem, USN; her daughter, Sheryl Czepluch; and her son, Glen Wondergem. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to your local church in support of its community outreach ministries. In her final years, Shirley often reflected on what a blessed life she had lived. She was deeply grateful for the many years she was given, the love of her family and friends, and the countless memories they shared. Her life was one of faith, devotion, and gratitude, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitation and a Christian Service will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at L. A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home, 2607 Williams Boulevard, Kenner, Louisiana.
