Phyllis Ann Dusang

Phyllis Ann Dusang was born on July 24, 1940 in New Orleans, Louisiana to John and Rita Mayer. She grew up in New Orleans with her younger sister Linda Mayer and cousin Norris Roy. She attended East Jefferson High School where she met the love of her life, Edward Dusang at age 15. They were married on May 17, 1958 and together they raised three daughters: Peggy Hahn (Dewayne), Ishee Miller (Daniel) and Becky LeForce (Rick). Phyllis filled her family's house with delicious food, strong faith, endless laughter and, of course, music! Her daughters recall spending Friday nights watching their parents push back the furniture, rolling up the rug and dancing in their living room for hours on end. Phyllis taught her girls to cook the best gumbo, sew first-day-of-school outfits and Halloween costumes, sit on countertops, care for their garden and be one another’s built-in best friends. Phyllis was fondly known as “Mawmaw” to 11 grandchildren (as well as many of their friends!) and 14 great-grandchildren. Phyllis spent many years working at the Rocky Mountain Kidney Center in Denver, CO where she originally intended to do paperwork and filing. However, Phyllis’s gift as a caregiver was quickly realized and she spent nearly 15 years comforting and supporting patients. Phyllis’s green thumb helped her nurture a beautiful garden both at her own home and that of her mother’s. She dedicated much of her life to the Lutheran Church. Phyllis volunteered as a Sunday School teacher for many years where she passed on her love of God, Jesus and faith to the next generation through music, stories and even costumes! Among all her passions and hobbies, Phyllis’s favorite time was the memories and laughs she shared with her husband, drinking wine on the veranda, reminiscing on the beautiful life and family they built together in the company of their canine companions Sarah, Drewzy and many more. Relatives & friends of the family are invited to attend the celebration of Phyllis’s life on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Kenner, LA. All are encouraged to dress in bright colors which reflect the joy and light that Phyllis brought into our lives. In lieu of flowers, donations are accepted to the General Fund of Christ the King Lutheran Church. Phyllis considered this church and community an extension of her family and she would be so pleased that it be supported in her honor.
