David Charles Chapman

David Charles Chapman passed away at his home in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 22nd, 2025. Born and raised in Harahan, Louisiana, David served as Sergeant First Class in the Louisiana Army National Guard’s Military Police Battalion and enjoyed a long career as a trusted crane operator. David had a rare zeal for life and sense of adventure. An avid scuba diver, he was a multi-year spear fishing rodeo champion who loved going offshore with friends and looking for the big fish. He acquired his passion for the great outdoors at an early age, hunting and camping with his father Harry and brother Michael. He was a patient teacher, spending many happy mornings and evenings in the deer stand at his family home in Poplarville with those he loved. David balanced his active lifestyle with a deep commitment to friends and family. He selflessly devoted himself to caring for others, in particular his parents, his father-in-law Ted, and his wife Ellen. He deeply valued his friendships and maintained close lifelong relationships. He was someone who loved to be productive and helpful. The protective drill sergeant with the booming voice had an unexpected soft side. Deeply knowledgeable about plants and flowers, David was dedicated to maintaining his garden and farm. He had a joy that was undeniable and contagious. Known to make a mean White Russian or mint julep, he loved to entertain and never missed an opportunity to get down on the dance floor. He enjoyed jamming to WWOZ while working in the garage alongside his faithful canine companions Chester, Beau, and Zoe. David will be remembered for the impact he made on those who knew him. He will be missed by all, and especially by his parents, Louise M. and Harry L. Chapman, Jr., his brother Michael J. Chapman, his stepdaughter Kelsey L. Haddow (Carson), his stepson Dr. Jonathan R. Zeitzer, his step grandchildren John C., Theodore S.F., and Campbell F. Haddow, and his many friends in the community. David was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ellen. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation and Memorial Mass at L.A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home, 2607 Williams Blvd., Kenner, LA, on Friday, March 7, 2025. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a Memorial Mass at 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gladewaves.
