Mary Josephine (Mimi) Luria Cerise passed peacefully to eternal rest on June 25, 2017. Born January 23, 1930 to Edward Scannell Luria and Angele Marie Marechal Luria in Enghiens les Bains, France. The family moved to Great Neck, NY in 1934, and to New Orleans in 1938. She graduated from Dominican High School in 1946. In 1949 she married Henry A. Cerise, Jr., who precedes her in death in 1995, after 46 years of marriage. Mimi and Henry raised five children, Henry Marechal Cerise (Cynthia), Michele Cerise Peterson (Jerrold – deceased), Captain Edward Luria Cerise, Sr. (Debbie), Eugene Peter Cerise (Cathy) and Marie Angele Cerise Seeling (Frank “Buddy” - deceased). She is also survived by her nephew, Paul Marechal Nick (Jo Anne) and niece, Violet “Peggy” Nick Burgard (Carlton “Corky”). She is pre-deceased by her sister Paule Luria, granddaughter, Adrienne Louise “Pookie” Peterson, great grandson, Tyler Marechal Cerise, and great granddaughters, Emmy Cate and Ella Cerise Armstrong. Mimi leaves 18 surviving grandchildren: Michele Aimee Cerise French (Steven), Jason Marechal Cerise (Erin), Paul Michael Cerise (Julie), Amanda Cerise Lagarde (Jeffrey), Angele Peterson Knight (Powell), Captain Jerrold Bert Peterson, Captain Henry James Peterson, Elizabeth Peterson Boudreaux (Jerrod), Emily Ann Peterson, Captain Edward Luria Cerise, Jr., Leslie Cerise Armstrong (Jason), Angella Cerise Keel (Christopher), Eugene Peter Cerise, Jr., Timothy Edward Cerise, Frank E. Seeling, IV (Stacia), Michael Adam Seeling (Trish), Catherine Seeling Lee (Paul), and Christopher Alan Seeling. Also survived by 27 great grandchildren. In 1977 she earned her BA in Education at Dominican College, New Orleans. In 1987, she earned her Masters in Special Education from the University of Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, C.E.C. and ACLD. Mimi began her teaching career in 1960 at St. Mary Magdalen School in Metairie. Under Msgr. Crosby Kern and Sr. Margaret Ann, O.S.U., she founded the Special Education Department at St. Angela Merici School in Metairie. Services will be held Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 6425 W. Metairie Avenue, Metairie, LA. Visitation is 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a Requiem Mass immediately following. Interment will be at Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to The Good Shepherd School, 353 Baronne St., New Orleans, LA 70112, St. Michaels’s Special School, 1522 Chippewa St., New Orleans, LA 70130, and the Cenacle Retreat House, 5500 St. Mary St., Metairie, LA 70006.
