June 6, 1950 - October 7, 2015
Lucy Adams Kuylen peacefully passed away on October 7, 2015 in the loving presence of her family at the age of 65. Lucy excelled at nurturing people, plants, and animals. She adored her grandchildren. She was passionate about education and reading. She was revered for cooking the world's best damn seafood gumbo. She loved tomato sandwiches, boiled peanuts, crawfish, bacon, and partially-frozen diet coke. She taught us to speak up for the voiceless and to fight injustice. She enjoyed reflecting on the front porch of her childhood home in Isabel and found peace in rainstorms. She encouraged us to be courageous, to follow our dreams, and to keep a sense of humor as we faced the challenges of our lives. Lucy was born in Isabel, Washington Parish, Louisiana, to Daniel Wilkerson Adams, Sr., and Jane Coon Adams. She was a graduate of Enon High School (Class of 1968) and received a bachelor's degree from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond and a master's degree from Southern University in New Orleans. As a social worker, she dedicated her career to advocating for Louisiana's abused and neglected children and improving the conditions of child and residential care facilities. Lucy is survived by her husband, Frederick Kuylen, Jr., her children, Justin Lee Hawks (Elizabeth), Ana Moreno Ott (George), and Christina Moreno Kammer (Noel), and her grandchildren, Alexis Hawks, Austin Hawks, Jackson Ott, Madison Hawks, and Brady Kammer. She is also survived by two sisters, Ola Adams Hobgood and Carolyn Adams McCain, and by two brothers, Clyde Adams (Sue) and Danny Adams (Cindy). Lucy was preceded in death by her parents: Daniel Adams, Sr., and Jane Adams; sisters: Edith Adams, Alda Lee Adams Bennett, Alice Adams Scroggs, Dorothy Adams Bush, Thelma Adams Young, Hazel Adams and Betty Sue Adams Brumfield; and brothers: Otis Adams, Ocie Adams, Earl Adams, Ray Adams, Lavelle Adams, and Willie Adams. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral Memorial Service at L. A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home, 2607 Williams Blvd., Kenner on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 4:30 pm Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, her family respectfully requests that you consider a donation to the Louisiana SPCA or that you simply do an unexpected act of kindness for another human being in her memory.
