George Eduardo Castaneda Bahamon Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Jorge(George) Eduardo Castañeda Bahamon, age 78, of Kenner, Louisiana passed away peacefully July 4, 2022. He was born in Campo Alegré, Huila in the country of Colombia. The name of his birthplace loosely translates to Happy Field or Town. Something that resonates with many that knew him because he always loved to dance, listen to Colombian music, and have a good time. He is the second oldest of 8 siblings. He is preceded in death by his parents Jorge Eduardo Castaneda and Mina Bahamon de Castaneda. George immigrated to the United States at the age of 21 and started his new life in Paterson, New Jersey. He met and married Rafaela Almonte Fermin and had three children. The family moved to the New Orleans area in 1979 eventually settling in Kenner. George was a true entrepreneur. He owned several businesses including SGM Manufacturing Company, while working 22 years as a bellman at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel. He worked very hard all his life not only to provide for his nuclear family, but also his family in Colombia which included his parents, brothers, and sisters. Because of all his efforts, he paid college tuition for several of his siblings while still taking care of his wife and children. He was funny, loved to laugh, and could charm anyone he met. He was hardworking and cared deeply for the people he loved. His generosity helped many that crossed his path. Before Alzheimer’s took its toll, he loved to travel, listen to music, and spend time with his family. George is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rafaela Almonte Fermin of Ranchete, Dominican Republic; daughter Sonia Wilson and son-in-law Scott Wilson of Wellington, FL; son George Castaneda Jr. and daughter-in-law Wanda Castaneda of Metairie; daughter Maritza Palumbo and son-in-law Andrew Palumbo of Metairie; 8 grandchildren; Caroline, Zachary, and Eli; Joshua, Jakob and Jonathan; Ava and Andrew along with many other and family and friends. George will be immensely missed by all that knew and loved him. Services will be held on Friday July 29th at Our Lady of Divine Providence, 8617 W. Metairie Ave., Metairie, LA. Visitation will be from 11-12:00 pm followed by a memorial mass at 12:00 pm. All that knew and loved him are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or the Dementia Society of America.
