Roland Joseph Bienvenu

Roland Joseph Bienvenu passed into eternal life on February 14, 2018 at the age of 84. He was born in New Orleans, LA on July 13, 1933. Beloved and devoted husband to Marilyn vanMerrienboer Bienvenu for 63 years. Sister of Marilyn B. Alleman. Father of Colette Bernard (Brian), Donna Dowden (Matthew), Arlene Masilla (Don), James R. Bienvenu (Michele), Steven J. Bienvenu (Beverly), Michael J. Bienvenu Sr. (Sonia), Brian G. Bienvenu (Francine), Neal J. Bienvenu (Stephanie), Michelle Hartel (Nick) and Robert D. Bienvenu (Monique). Grandfather of Shaun (Brandi), Scott (Jamie) and Andrea Bernard; Amy (Patrick) Buchta, Brittny (Kurt) Busurelo, Kyle and Nicole Hartel, James J. III., Jared, Chelsea, Michael Jr., Kristen, David, Alexander, Joshua, Alyson, Nicholas, Luke and Marley Bienvenu. Great Grandfather of Lanie, Ava, Brynn and Emma Bernard, Hailey Buchta and Kolton Busurelo. He was preceded in death by his parents, James J. Bienvenu, Jr. and Mary Ida Behlar Bienvenu and granddaughter, Brooke E. Bienvenu. Roland attended St. Joseph Seminary, Jesuit and Kenner High School. He was employed by N.O.P.S.I. for 43 years, retiring in 1995. He joined the U.S. Navy becoming a submariner as a torpedoman at 17 years old. After which he also served in the 159th Louisiana Air National Guard in Belle Chase, LA. He resided in River Ridge since 1959 and was a founding member of St. Matthew the Apostle Parish. He served as an usher, Eucharistic minister and Cub Master of Pack 266 from 1969 – 1975. He taught CCD classes, marriage prep, and Marriage Encounter for over 25 years. He and his wife received the order of St. Louis Medal in 1979. He was ordained a permanent Deacon in 1991 and served his parish for over 19 years. Chaplain at Children’s Hospital until he retired at the age of 75. The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the staff of EJGH, Touro Infirmary, and R & R Home Care for the excellent and kind care they provided during his illnesses. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church, 10021 Jefferson Hwy., River Ridge on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation at the church from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to St. Matthew the Apostle School or Children’s Hospital. Arrangements by L. A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home.
