Oddny Clausen

Oddny Clausen, a beloved resident of Metairie, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024, at the age of 99, after a short hospital stay. Born in Bergen, Norway, on June 9, 1925, Oddny lived a life filled with resilience, dedication, and love. She was the cherished daughter of the late Ole Ellingsen Nornes and Alvhilde Oline Loennigen, and sister to the late Else Marie Nornes and the late Asbjorn Olav Nornes. Oddny was the devoted widow of Ragnar Clausen, with whom she shared many happy years. Oddny's surviving family members, who reside in Norway, include her nephew, Morten Soerensen, and his children, Isak Oliver Sandvold Soerensen and Sofie Oline Sandvold Soerensen, as well as Isak's son, Philip. Her Norwegian family were her pride and joy, and she always held them close to her heart. Born and raised in Bergen, Oddny witnessed the occupation and liberation of Norway during World War II, an experience that shaped her indomitable spirit. She completed her education up to the 7th grade, attended homemaker school, and took courses in business administration, demonstrating her lifelong commitment to learning. In 1960, Oddny moved to New Orleans with her husband, a Norwegian seaman, where she began a long and successful career in the maritime industry as a secretary for DNV. She retired in 2000, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and dedication. Oddny was a pillar of the former Norwegian Seamen's Church on Prytania Street in New Orleans, where she held numerous leadership positions in Kvinneforeningen. Her contributions to the community were immeasurable, and her handmade crocheted sweaters, blankets, and other items are treasured by many. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Oddny's many friends in the United States, especially those who assisted her in her later years, enabling her to live independently in her home. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Oddny will be buried in her birthplace of Bergen, Norway, at a later date, where she will rest in peace with her husband, surrounded by the memories of her homeland.
