Lloyd J. Engeran

Lloyd J. Engeran, a man of profound faith, charisma, and a deep love for the culture of New Orleans, entered eternal rest on September 3, 2026, at the age of 86. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and friends, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in New Orleans, LA, on February 20, 1940, to Lloyd Joseph Engeran and Marie Anesia Dinette, Lloyd spent much of his life in Hammond, LA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Laura, and his daughter, Julie. His memory will be kept alive by his daughters, Laura Stogner, Bambi DeVille, Tara Engeran, Christiane Engeran, and Jennifer Kratzer; his grandchildren, Patrick, Nicole, Catherine, Ema, Ella, Seth, Henri, Sophia, and Jacklyn; and his great-grandchildren Jessie, Josie, and Eliza. He is also survived by his half-sister, Avra O’Dwyer, and his half-brother, Marc Engeran. Lloyd’s athletic gifts emerged at a young age. While attending Holy Cross High School, he played on the basketball team and became affectionately known as “Lizard Legs,” a nickname used by his coaches and even in newspaper accounts of his athletic accomplishments. After graduating from Holy Cross in 1957, he attended LSU where he continued to excel in both basketball and track and field. As LSU’s primary long jumper, he became an SEC track champion and held the conference record in the long jump. Lloyd had a lifelong passion for history and rare collectibles. A devoted numismatist and philatelist, he possessed an exceptional knowledge of rare coins and stamps and by 1960, he was working as a coin dealer in New Orleans. His career later took him to San Francisco, where he operated the Eureka Coin Shop and established himself in the national rare coin market, handling significant U.S. and Latin American rarities. Upon returning home to New Orleans, Lloyd became a fixture in the French Quarter, establishing a long-running antiques and collectibles business on Royal Street. With his magnetic personality and extraordinary gift for storytelling, he delighted clients, friends, and visitors with vivid and captivating histories of his collections and unforgettable stories from his life. Lloyd possessed a lifelong appreciation for art, history, music, sports, wine, and above all, exceptional food. His happy place was sharing a meal with those he loved at iconic New Orleans establishments such as Antoine’s, Bayona, Drago’s, Galatoire’s, Irene’s, Liuzza’s, and Mandina’s. Also central to Lloyd's life was his enduring Catholic faith. He believed deeply in the promise of eternal life and found comfort in being reunited with his beloved wife and daughter. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend a memorial service honoring Lloyd’s life on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1802 Tulane Ave., New Orleans.
