Dorothy Jane Harris

On October 6, 2022, our beloved mother, daughter, sister and friend Dorothy Jane Harris passed away due to complications from long term health issues. She was 56 years old. She was the youngest of 5 children, born to James and Ann Maechling at Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, LA on January 11, 1966. Dorothy or Dottie, as she was known to family and friends, was a free-spirited soul who was the life of the party anywhere she went. Unique and true to herself, Dorothy was undoubtedly one of a kind. Dorothy spent a portion of her youth growing up in New Orleans. Later, her parents purchased a home in Kenner, LA where she lived during her adolescent years. She married at the age of 18 to her late husband Anthony Paul Harris, which they had two daughters, Monica and Melissa. She lived most of her adult life as a homemaker who resided in Jefferson Parish up until the time of her passing. Although she may not have been a world known author or actress, she came from humble beginnings. Over the past 15 years Dorothy battled severe health issues including overcoming cancer twice. She had gone through such a drastic physical change she was almost unrecognizable from the person that she was and could no longer do things she once did. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Anthony P. Harris, parents James & Ann Maechling and brother, James Henry Maechling. She is survived by her daughters, Monica O'Neal (Mike) and Melissa Harris, nine grandchildren: Taralyn, Davon, Douglas Jr., Cameron, Hailey, Angelique, Layla, Emma and Robin, her sisters: Deborah Brister (Joe), Leonora Marquez (the late Luis) and Kimberley Gonzalez (the late Ricardo Sr.) and niece and nephews: Charles and James Brister, Maria and Ricardo Gonzalez, Jr. Also survived by Aunt Patricia Ellis, Uncle Ernest C. Maechling, longtime friend Kenneth Andrieu and numerous family and friends. She was loved by many who knew her and will truly be missed dearly. Take your rest Mama, you don't have to suffer anymore. You are free...you will forever be in our hearts. We love you always...and we're going to miss you more than you could have ever known. Arrangements entrusted to L.A. Muhleisen & Son. A Memorial Service will be at a later date at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 5025 Cleveland Place, Metairie, LA 70003.
